Everything About Activated Charcoal

· Charcoal beauty products became the latest big beauty trend last year and they don't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon..
· If you’re unsure what makes charcoal so special, the Good Houskeeping Institute is here to give you a run-down on why this "it" beauty ingredient is so popular right now.
· Plus, we've rounded up our top picks of the best products containing activated charcoal.

· What is activated charcoal?

· Activated charcoal (also known as activated carbon), is an ingredient that has taken the beauty world by storm. But it’s not the same as regular charcoal, so we wouldn’t advise digging up the contents of your barbecue just yet...
· Activated charcoal is formed when charcoal is treated with oxygen. It’s been used for thousands of years in medicine, particularly to treat overdoses and poisoning.
· As a natural beauty ingredient, however, it traces back to the ancient Egyptians, who utilised it in many ways. It’s rumoured that they loved it so much, they nicknamed it "black magic".

· How does activated charcoal work?

· When acid or steam is combined with carbon rich materials, such as coal, wood and coconut shells, it opens millions of bonding sites between the carbon atoms. This increases the surface area, which in turn increases its capacity for absorption.
· As charcoal becomes so porous, it can attract and bind to certain chemicals, almost like a magnet. These accumulate on the surface, which is what makes charcoal so great for medicine and beauty products.

· Why use charcoal beauty products?

· In beauty, activated charcoal is amazing for drawing out toxins and removing impurities – win, win! It’s typically used on the face, but also to naturally whiten teeth by removing surface stains.
· Charcoal can also:
· Absorb oil and sebum (from the skin and scalp)
· Leave skin cleaner and less susceptible to breakouts
· Tighten and reduce the appearance of pores
· Gently exfoliate
· Sounds pretty great, right?

· Who should charcoal beauty products?

· The effects of activated charcoal can vary depending on the product. It's perfect for anyone with combination or oily skin or those prone to breakouts. It’s also great for all skin types during the hotter months, when the production of sweat and sebum increases.
· On the hair, it’s most effective on oilier scalps and those more susceptible to dandruff or itching.

· How and when should I use activated charcoal?

· Activated charcoal can be found in many different products, including as masks, cleansers, pore strips and shampoo. Most of them can normally be used on a regular basis but we always recommend double checking the instructions!
· Alongside beauty products, activated charcoal can sometimes be found in skin supplements.
· Whilst the majority of these are generally safe to ingest, it’s advised to be wary when using these at the same time as certain medications.
· As activated charcoal can bind to certain chemicals it can interact with medication, reducing its effects.

· Anything else I need to know about activated charcoal?

· When using a whitening tooth powder with activated charcoal, be sure to check the instructions. Some of the powders can be quite abrasive, which could damage the tooth enamel and therefore may not be suitable for daily use!
